And I’ve been thinking about how something must be done to us.

Advent is a season of waiting. A season where we wait not only for the arrival of God but for God to come and make all things right. There are a lot of things wrong in this world which means there is a lot of work to be done.
But, do we actually believe that? Do we believe that God can make all things new and set all things right?
The truth is, we have done a lot of damage to one another. We can try to pit our problems on ideas or politics or generalizations or even God… but in reality, each one of us hold a piece of the blame. We’ve started arguments that haven’t been resolved. We’ve told lies we haven’t reversed. We’ve harbored hate and refused to let go.
There is a lot of work to be done.
I’m reminded of something Fleming Rutledge said in a sermon when she was contemplating the injustice we perpetuate. “Something must be done to us.”
The old testament passage from last Sunday’s Advent texts is Malachai 3:1-4.
Like John the Baptist, a messenger who prepares the way for the coming of Jesus, Malachi is a messenger who prepares an unfaithful people for the coming judgment of God.
