…And Even Though It’s Confusing, There is No Need To Be Alarmed!

My wife has been pregnant a few times. Enough times to have experienced the classic social blunder from an extra-friendly lady at the grocery store.
“How far along are you?”
I can’t speak from personal experience, but from what I’ve heard, this inquiry can be uncomfortable.
Especially when the woman being asked isn’t actually pregnant. Or, when she has no intention of ever being pregnant. Or, when she is pregnant but isn’t telling anyone yet — especially to a random woman juggling a handful of Rice-A-Roni boxes in the checkout line.
It might seem like a harmless question, but I can speak from personal experience on this point at least: It is easy to make accusations about someone from a distance that are usually misguided and often unhelpful. When those observations are expressed out loud, to ourselves or to those around us, they can become harmful.
The Showing of Hannah
In the first chapter of 1 Samuel, Hannah longs to be pregnant. Unlike her husband’s other wife who has children, Hannah is left without. And though her husband treats her with honor, she is grieved by her barrenness.
