What a tale of two sisters teaches us about the punishment of God.

“The hairs on your arm will stand up
At the terror in each sip and in each sup
Will you partake of that last offered cup
Or disappear into the potter’s ground?
When the man comes around” – Johnny Cash (The Man Comes Around)
I’ve been thinking about cups recently.
The cup that is mentioned in Ezekiel 23 is a representation of the wrath of God and is a cup that God passes from one sister, Oholah (Samaria) to another sister, Oholibah (Jerusalem).
“You have gone the way of your sister; therefore I will give her cup into your hand.”- Ezekiel 23:31
Depending on their ages, if I would have taken a cup out of one of my daughter’s hands and given it to her sister, all hell would have broken loose.
But in this story, neither sister wants anything to do with the Father’s cup. For to take and taste it would be like drinking hell from a firehose.
Nobody wants this cup!
It would have been better for her if she would have earlier turned to the Lord’s judgment. A drink received in the form of repentance would have tasted much better.
But unfortunately, Oholibah’s sins have chosen this specific cup. And because of her prostitution (idol worship) Oholibah will experience the full measure of God’s punishment.
